What makes style?

Posted by Mrmilkcarton - March 25th, 2010

Is it doing your own thing?

Is it taking whats already there and making it your own?

Is it taking whats popular and taking that and doing it differently?

Is it being different that very few others sound like it?

Reason I ask is I'm thinking about sending in a song to a few labels, if it turns out the way I want it too. I'm pretty sure I'm at the point where I can't mess it up too much. Anyway that's beside the point. The point I'm trying to get at is I feel I almost have the quality and I'm pretty sure I do with this but the melodies and style generally don't sound like any song. it tends to be my problem with alot of things. My songs sound good but, the style just isn't something you'd hear in a mix since I've never heard anything generally like them I get a bit uneasy when thinking of sending it in.

I want things to be perfect and when I compare to favorite artists I always feel like I lack that little something but, it could just be my style. My style might focus on other things that my favorite songs don't have but they also have something I don't have. Really I'm just rambling and I have no reason to not try. Its not like I lose anything. Just kinda wanted to see people's opinion to decide.

So the question I have for you, is having your own style good? Do you think it will make you a popular artist or would sounding somewhat similar to someone else be the best choice?

In my opinion I want my style to be popular (in trance/house/progressive) but, if I need to sound like other songs I'll do it to get my head into the doorway of labels and all that fun stuff.

Anyway BRB BOSTON.

if you want your song to be heard by many, you can't just make something 100% different. you need to have elements of popular music in it to connect with the audience. if you want to leave your mark you could do a picasso where you make something so different, it takes hundreds of years for artists to catch up with you (the ones that were slowly changing popular music like i'm suggesting)....if any of that makes sense i dont know i'm so tired

At the very least, if it is so different, no one can say you are copying off anyone.

I'd say don't worry about whether your style is nothing like you've ever heard before, thats probably a good thing. As far as the question at hand, having a style is something that is really subjective. Its not always good and not always bad, it depends on the situation. For example, if you have something thats completely unique, then its good because its never been done before, but its also bad because you can't describe it to someone without taking up an hour of their time. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about labels, just worry primarily about your music, and if it gets good, it'll find a way out there. With or without a label.

Being different... Is something you should aim for. It's something thats Unique, It's what separates the best from the worst - style.

And you, Mrmilkcarton. Do not need a style change. Cheers.

You have awesome music, b.t.w. :D. If you're thinking about sending something in, then (I guess it's really obvious) just choose what you'd most like to listen to. Take into account that they (should) listen to a crap-load of music. In that respect, differentiating yourself is important, and a style is a great way to do so. Having done that, you need to keep their attention.

IMHO, good music is always emotionally relevant, immersive (swallows me whole and makes me feel part of the music itself) and technically well rounded. Above all, music is an art, so it's all about emotion. That being said, you make good music. Good luck with getting signed.

If some random person can distinguish your songs from a vast pool of others, then you have a style. That's really the only sure-fire way of proving it.

Or they just listen to my song for a loooooong time.

What do mean??? you have style.... i listen to your music and i never once compared a song to any other artist i listened to.... you made some remixes of other songs, but it was in a style that only MrMilkcarton makes.... so don't worry about your style, just expose your music to major record companies so you can make big bucks out of....

You got some pretty cool shit man. Got aim?

Heard the news the current account Xmillsa was banned on youtube so he resorted to XmillsaZ his new account there and is re-uploading all his videos on there in order like last time and need some few things to enjoy the support that he already has

Here's one thing in advance from there:TO ALL ARTISTS!!!
If I upload your song and it originally contained extra information in the video info, PLEASE TELL ME and I will re-add it! I cant add anything extra unless you tell me.
Sorry if this causes any problems to anyone.
